If you want to try your hand at a little bit of machine embroidery without investing tons of money in a machine, the PE500 is the one for you. (Amazon was offering it at 50% off, at $299 a tremendous incentive to buy.) This embroidery machine comes with a medium-sized embroidery hoop, 2 pre-wound bobbins, 3 spools of embroidery thread, 3 stabilizer sheets, a small scissors, plus the usual Brothers grab bag of essential sewing machine tools. There are only 70 designs pre-loaded on the machine, but you can do monogramming in your choice of 3 different alphabet styles and acquire more designs via embroidery cards or transfer them from your pc via the cable that is included in this package. Many more designs can be obtained from Brother's ibroidery website. Unlike a couple of other Brother sewing machines that I've used in the past, bobbins wind smoothly and evenly with a minimum of fuss.
Having problems? With a push of a button, help screens are easily accessible - right on the machine itself!
This machine is a delight to use, but if it doesn't stitch first check the upper threading. The tension at point #2 (diagrams for all threading are painted on the exterior of the machine) can be tricky. If you have the presser foot down, there is a good chance that your thread isn't on the right of the little metal bar.

I have had this machine for about 3 months now and I actually like it better then my Brother PE770. I like my PE770 cause it can embroider up to 5x7" designs. The Brother PE500 has a maximum embroidery size of 4x4". I had it working within 5 minutes of taking it out of the box. I had my PE770 for 2 years and it was never opened when I got this machine...I was scared to take it out of the box. After using the PE500, I couldn't believe that I was intimidated my machine embroidery. The PE500 has a self threader that has worked for me every time...my PE770's threader has never worked for me yet. The only thing I don't like about the PE500 is that you have to connect it to a computer to load designs...it has some nice designs preloaded on it already and a few fonts too! The memory in it is capable of holding 12 more designs that you load onto it...if you want more, you have to delete some. All The Brother machines use the .PES format, and once you get this machine, you will go crazy searching for designs.The PE500 is so easy to use...it might take you a few ruined projects to get used to your machine, but practice on old scraps of fabric and get used to stabilizers and what kind to use with each fabric and you won't regret owning this machine! This machine will make you become an embroidery junkie!!!! Before you know it, you will be wanting a bigger machine! After playing with this machine for a week, I finally opened my PE770. The PE500 was much easier to get used to. This machine takes regular sewing home machine needles. If you have any troubles with this machine, do not adjust your tension!!! Before adjusting the tension, make sure that your bobbin is in correctly and that you are using the correct stabilizer for the job.

I M having the best time with this machine It is so easy to operate I am not a sewer but sence I have gotten this machine I cant STOP be sure to search for PES FILES and make sure you only get the 4 X 4 designs any bigger will not show up on your machine.

Clover makes great pins, but their flower head pins are very, very expensive. This large pack is far more economical than their usual small paper envelopes. However, the pins in this pack are their thick, strong pins. They work well for garment sewing, but for quilting I find I prefer their finer flower head pins, which while less durable are more flexible, and thus do not cause the fabric layers to shift as much, and are easier to sew over.

These pins are made specifically for paper-piecing, not regular sewing or even other types of quilting. The pin IS quite substantial. It has to go through the paper and then two or three layers of fabric. I would not try to use these pins for regular sewing, but they work well for paper piecing.

I bought these based on the reputation of clover sewing supplies. I also have the glass head pins made by Clover, and they have turned out to be great pins. These however, are very thick, I mean thicker than any straight pin I have used. I think for the price, you could get several times more pins for less money, especially if you want just a straight pin (a thick one, did I mention?..). I do have to say, that I think Amazon is a great place to purchase things, so this review is based on the pins only.

I had been given some warnings about EQ7 having a "learning curve" (and read some, in various reviews and forums online), but since the Hoopsisters Embroidablock quilting class I'm taking has the quilt design in EQ7 format and I wanted to go wild with fabrics/color changes,... I took the plunge. I have found this software only took me a few hours over about 3 days, to get the hang of it. I DID use the users manual, and watched some of the tutorial videos that come with the software. At that point, I was opening the Sketchbook in EQ7 for the quilt we were making, had imported my own fabric photos into the fabric stash in the project, and was happily clicking away on the quilt layout to put my own fabrics where I wanted them in the design.
But I have to put in a disclaimer, lol. I have a Bachelors in Computer Science, have worked as a Quality Assurance Software Tester for ages, and have taken college courses in using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I have to say that many of the mechanisms for working on the quilt, or it's blocks, or setting up special "palettes" of threads and fabrics in EQ7 operates with an approach that's very similar to Illustrator.
I think anyone willing to study the information Electric Quilt supplies, no matter how non-computer-savvy they are, can learn to use this with patience.

EQ7 is a mature and powerful quilt design program. Although it may not be intuitive right out of the box, once you view the training tutorials it is easy to use. I really like that it is very forgiving, allowing one to try various design ideas and change things if desired. It has a large library of built-in block designs so you can design quilts forever without having to make your own blocks. However, if you want to design your own blocks from scratch, the block worktable accomodates this task quite nicely. It also has a large library of fabrics to use, or you can take photos of your own fabrics and enter them into your library. These libraries are great tools, as they allow you to "paint" your quilt blocks with actual fabrics rather than just color them in.
There are a number of helpful tools to modify your quilt design, such as tools to rotate or flip blocks, auto fill the entire quilt with a block, fill alternate blocks with a single design, etc. I particularly like the symmetry tool which allows you to rotate all the blocks in a quilt in a symmetrical fashion. There are 16 different iterations before you return to the original layout. The patterns produced by this tool on a quilt of log cabin blocks is amazing. The program lets you keep variations of every quilt design simply by adding them to the sketchbook. Everything you add is available to bring up later.
The license for this product allows you to have it activated on two computers at a time. As long as you have internet access you can easily deactivate one computer and activate another, so you can have the software installed on every computer in your house but only activated on any 2 computers at a time. It isn't quite as flexible as a dongle, but it is fairly painless since both deactivation and activate are quick and simple processes.
I highly recommend this program for anyone interested in designing their own quilts. I have tried other programs which were primitive by comparison.

This is a complex graphic program that does something unique. It allows you to create easy to very difficult and unique quilting projects quickly and see what they are going to look like before you sew a stitch.
It is not hard to learn, but you have to do what the developers of this program ask you to do. You need to watch the videos (about an hour's worth cut up into small blocks) and do the PDF lessons. Both are included with the program and are part of what gets loaded onto your computer when you install the program.
I have had Electric Quilt less than a week. I've watched the videos. When I was done I had a pretty good idea where all the tools were and what the buttons were for. I've done the first 6 PDF lessons. At this point I not only could design my own quilt, I have done it as part of the lessons because they do encourage you to play at the end of each one.
Ever wonder how someone controls a complex color scheme? Ever wonder how to skew a block so it will fit inside a star? You will learn how to do both of those things within the first 6 lessons.
The design of the program is not clunky and it is certainly a Windows program. What it isn't is a Microsoft program, so the buttons don't look exactly like the ones in Word or Excel.

I got a loopdedoo for my niece as a Christmas gift. When the box arrived, I just had to try it out to make sure it wasn't too advanced for a 7-year-old. Well... about 30 bracelets latter, I was MORE than hooked. My kids (all boys) were so excited about it, I went back and ordered more for the rest of my nieces and my own kids. Here's what's great: It's easy to use, and the end-product is so fantastic, you won't believe it. My guys wanted bracelets in all of their school team's colors. Too much fun.

My sister bought this for my 7 year old daughter. The instructions were not entirely clear, but we persevered and I am so glad that we did. After making a couple of bracelets the instructions made sense and my husband, daughter and I were making lots of friendship bracelets. After school the next day, my daughter came home with several bracelet requests from friends and it's been fun making those.
I am looking for accessories to jazz up the bands or to personalize beyond the colors - I expect that it will keep the interest level up.
This really is a good gift for children, ages 7+. I'll be buying a couple more for nieces and friends in the near future and I will just let the parents know that it will take a few "goes" before the instructions make sense.

First I want to say I am NOT affiliated with this company in any way. If you'll look at my other reviews you'll see I love to take craft gadgets and experiment with them. I was so excited when I saw this I opted for the overnight shipping option (prime member here).
I received it last night. I immediately read through the instruction booklet and watched the video a couple of times as was suggested. My first bracelet turned out great until I started to fiddle with it. It was the simple swirl. As I gently fiddled with it, the threads separated and the core showed.

Mary Mulari does beautiful work. The books shows that, however nice the photos may be, we need a book that TEACHES US HOW!! Something this book lacks. If you're looking for project ideas, this is the book for you.

I really think this book is well written, easy to understand and interpret and will use it often. There were some issues I was uncomfortable with using because of insecurity of ruining a project. Not now. All explained, all understood. I have many Jeanine Twigg books, and they are ALL superb.

This is a waste of money. Ms. Knapp's teaching and techniques are good, but both lessons on free-motion and thread stitching are way too short. Try Ricky Tim's DVDs or the one on McTavishing which are much better.

This DVD has many great techniques and is very informative about free motion quilting and thread painting. I really enjoyed the presentation and will view it again and again as I learn each of the techniques shown.

I bought this quite some time ago but haven't gotten around to the review until now. There is so much of this floss that I think I will never have to purchase anymore during my lifetime! However, I don't embroider massive projects either so, for the person who does, it looks like it would still last a long time. I've looked around and this price seems to be very competitive as well. I don't consider it to be a "toy" as the review indicates but, I guess girls would use it for making those bracelets and other items associated with the younger set. I use this for hand embroidering names and cartoon-style items on felt and other fabrics. I really recommend this due to the price, quality and shipping speed.

I bought this package hoping to get back into the friendship bracelet game after a lonnnng hiatus. The amount of floss you get is great for the price, but there are a couple of things I wish I had known before buying it:
-There aren't as many neutral skeins as I would have liked. I was hoping to get several skeins of black floss but there were only one or two in the package. There was no grey at all, which I found odd considering how many different colors there are.
-There are lots of skeins but they aren't very big. I used nearly an entire skein on one bracelet (though it was a pretty complicated pattern that called for a lot of floss).

This is a nice introduction to sewing for about ages 5 to 9. The project ideas are pretty cute and the fabric and trims are colorful, so most kids will be excited about making the stuffed animals and the bag, at least. (We didn't have a book of the correct size for the book cover project, but used the fabric for something else.) The projects aren't too complicated for beginning sewers but are neat enough to interest a (slightly) more experienced young seamstresses. My one criticism is that the scissors are just toys, and do not cut at all, and the "thimble" is also pretty useless if your child really needs to push a stitch through.

I searched a long time to find a quality beginners sewing kit for my 6 year old granddaughter and finally found this one. I am happy to have purchased Alex Toys "My First Sewing Kit", as it contains EVERYTHING needed to create projects, start to finish, giving a child confidence to go the next step in a knowledge and gift she will take with her the rest of her life--sewing! Included are: Patterns for small animals, stuffing, colorful embroidery thread, needles, pins, pin cushion, buttons, measuring tape and scissors (though I read reviews about them being the only poor-quality item, so I bought the Metro 5-pc scissor pkg through Amazon--Excellent!). Please let me start by saying that I have not actually USED this product yet. I purchased it as a gift for a friend's daughter who turned five, and before I gave it to her, I opened it up and photographed the things inside, so you can look at those pictures and the notes I wrote on them for even more information. However, I was so pleased with the quality and overall FUN-ness (to coin a word) of this product, that I am now back to purchase one for my own daughter who will be turning five soon. However, although I haven't yet used it, I can supply the following information:
1. The Box: The box it comes in is a little cardboard suitcase, brightly colored and patterned, with bright red stitching sewing it together. It has a typical suitcase-type handle made of metal and plastic that folds down flush against the box for easy storage, and those nifty metal clasps that one finds on tackle boxes or boxes for art supplies. It is easy for little people to open and close. The box is sturdy enough to keep using for the sewing kit, as long as you don't sit on it or anything.
2. The Supplies: Upon opening the box, you see a very FULL kit. It does not look like a thing or two overpackaged in a huge box; the box is stuffed....

Sewing is so much more than a delightful skill to have, and it's way much more than a hobby to pass the time. Teach your child to sew, and down the road you have also educated and clothed a family, and saved them untold amounts of money as time goes by.
This wonderful kit supplies your child with all that she/he needs to begin a sewing project immediately. There are lots of very easy projects, pre-cut patterns and a carrying case. Don't let the price scare you off!
These thread snips are the absolute best ever. I first used these many years ago when I did high-volume machine embroidery in Las Vegas. We tried many different brands/styles of snips over the years and these were by far the best. They are sooo light and easy to handle. Also, and most important, they are the sharpest snips you'll ever find! I've been known to use mine as a seem ripper and,in an emergency, a cuticle trimmer.

As expected, they are of the same high quality as the scissors in function. In form, I do wish they had designed a finger loop like some of the other thread snippers. The loop makes it easier to do high volume snipping because you wouldn't have to put it down to manipulate fabric. Still, these definitely last longer than the other looped ones we've tried.

as you would expect from gingher, this product cuts great. I purchased this because of their compact size and wear them around my neck on a lanyard. But the one annoying thing about them is that they are a bit sticky to to operate. Often I have to push them together to then get them open. Maybe I just got a lemon. Because all my other Gingher products are great.

I bought these 6" bent tweezers to pull short lengths of thread from bobbin under pressure feet of sewing machines and to remove lint and threads from bobbin cases. I selected this brand, since they were eligible for "Prime". I don't know if it is just this pair, but the tips don't meet so one can't pick up threads. I am returning them and will look for another brand.

The length is just right for small to medium terrariums. The sharp bent tip makes it easier to push plants into the substrate without disturbing neighboring plants. Also good for uprooting plants for replacement and moving stones in far ends of the vessels.

I was going to get a regular sewing machine, but it was only about $50 extra for one that could also do embroidery. The machine I decided to get was the Brother LB6800PRW. This is exactly the same as the SE-400, except it comes with a carry-cart for portability, and has some 'project runway' branding on it. Both have a 100mm by 100mm embroidery field (4 inches by 4 inches, though the hoop looks bigger in pictures). The LB6800PRW was only a few dollars more than the SE-400 when I purchased it, and the bag that comes with the LB6800PRW will at least keep the dust off the machine once I get bored with it. Both the SE-400 and this one have 512k of memory that can be accessed though USB, so you can make and load embroidery patterns from a computer. I don't understand why that is even optional, all embroidery machines should allow USB connectivity, there is more than just letters to embroider. Software to make your own embroidery is another matter, as nothing comes with the machine for making customized patterns, and it is pretty expensive, so keep that in mind.
The machine has a touch screen for choosing stitches and built in patterns, which I like. I don't like that the default stitch is one that I will never use (left stitch instead of centered in the foot), but I got used to always changing it pretty quickly. The auto-threader is awesome as well, threading the needle was usually a pain, especially with thicker thread. No issues on this one after a few months of use. The auto-thread-cut is a great feature as well (push a button and the machine cuts the top and bobbin thread)
The first thing I did was make some curtains for a small half-moon window in my bedroom. There is an annoying streetlight right on the other side, so it definitely needed a curtain....

I thought I had done my research on this machine but man was I wrong! After I had purchased this machine, I read that there is NO DIFFERENCE between this one and the SE 400 which you can buy for a full one hundred dollars less! The SE 400 is 369.00 right now on Amazon.com. Oh yes, there is a difference, you have the name project runway on your sewing machine and you get the little bag to cart your sewing machine around in. For that, you pay an extra 100 bucks! I never had any intention of using the bag, I would be embarrassed to cart around my sewing machine in a P.R. bag, I bought this one because I was told it was recommended by consumer reports so I looked no further. Don't get me wrong, this machine does what it says and is fun but the hoop is small and you have to buy larger hoops to use the larger designs. I could have spent that extra 100 on larger hoops or the embroidery thread you have to buy. Know also that the thread for an embroidery machine is very expensive. As are the hoops. Plan on spending at the very least another 60.00 on additional hoops and the thread for the machine is 5.25 for a full size spool. The smaller ones are cheaper but you get a lot less thread and the machine uses a lot of thread. Even with only the basic 8 colors, you have 42.00 bucks in thread and don't kid yourself into thinking you can get by with only 8 colors. I would buy this machine again but not the Project Runway machine, it would be the SE 400. I was considering not posting this review because its embarrassing to admit you were too stupid to look a bit further but maybe someone out there will benefit from the expensive lesson I have learned.

I've owned my Brother LB-6800THRD for just over a week now and I thought I'd offer up my impressions of this machine to others considering it. I pondered long and hard on which machine I should purchase, but like many of the other reviewers, was sold on the multitude of features and low price that were offered from Brother.
First off, let me state that the SE-400, LB-6800PRW and the LB-6800THRD are all the same machine (I emailed Brother and asked), the difference between the models comes with who is allowed to sell it. Mine, the LB-6800THRD, is sold by Costco but without the rolling bag that comes with the LB-6800PRW. Rather, the Costco version arrives with a twelve pack of embroidery thread. The SE-400 comes without any bonus accessories but is usually found at the cheapest price.
I am a beginner/novice sewer. In the past, and with my mother's help, I have made a number of blankets (that number would be three) of varying degrees of difficulty. So when the machine arrived I was not completely clueless as to where to begin, just pretty close. :) Set up was easy, it took a little while for me but was pretty obvious. My tension was uneven and despite me ratcheting the dial down from 4 to 2 I was unable to sort it out. After reading thru the manual I realized that two things were wrong, both of which were user-error. First, I'd threaded the bobbin in the under-carriage wrong and second when threading the needle I'd followed the wrong path down from the spindle.
Using the built-in thread cutter for sewing was causing my thread to slip off the needle (the automatic needle-threader is super cool) whenever I started back up sewing.

The LB6800 is a lovely machine with computer connectivity so you can download free embroidery designs from the internet.As a 'Project Runway' model it seems a little bit better made than a model made especially for the 'big box' stores. It sews and embroiders very well but I had problems at first with old and non branded threads. However, having bought Robison Anton threads and Madeira threads I have embroidered a few items for my grandchildren and they were beautiful. I have since made some curtains with heavy duty fabric with a velvet insert.

I have been a quilter for about 20 years, and these are the best snips I have used. There is a little space that the thread fits into, allowing you to cut very close to the item you are working on. I always use these both when I am piecing and when I am quilting. You wouldn't want to use them for anything except cutting thread.

I bought eq7 and was told by the manufacturer that this was a fantastic add on and that the blocks were not in eq. I bought the CD and perviewed the blocks. I must say that every block that is not a duplicate of the ones in eq are unusable and foundation patterns cannot be printed of them. For me this was a waste of money and I will be selling my copy on eBay.

Very easy to use format. I have been working on a reproduction quilt, however, working from only pictures and templates was difficult and cumbersome. Using BlockBase has made all the difference. I can customize my blocks and choosing the best method- paper-peicing or rotary cutting or templates- is a breeze. A great reference and so many options! Just what I was looking for.

This dehydrator is great. I've had the unit for almost a month now. So far I've dehydrated 20 pounds of "eye of round" for jerky. The recipe I used is at Recipezaar (can't post URL), recipe number 161262 (modified a bit to suite my taste, like I added about 1 tsp of onion powder and cut the liquid smoke about 25%). In fact I just did 10 of the 20 pounds yesterday. I've also dehydrated cantaloupe, kiwi slices, strawberries, grapes (come out as plump and juicy raisins), limes, oranges (those were more of an experiment), banana slices and watermelon (now that was interesting... sweet as candy), but back to the review.
I also got two sets of the Add-a-tray (two trays per package). It dries with all 8 trays just fine.

Years ago I had one of the round dehydrators with the drying unit on the bottom. This one is great because the drying unit is on the top. No more liquids dripping down onto the operational part of the unit. It has a plastic tray to catch the drips. I also like the square shape. I am able to get more on each tray compared to the round tray design. The plastic screens are round though. I did like the review from someone here suggesting using plastic mesh from the craft store. Wish I had seen that before I ordered my extra ones. I also like that it is quieter than the one I used to have. I have dried tomatoes, carrots and herbs so far. Jerky is next on the list.
Update: I still use this dehydrator. But I would no longer recommend it if you are going to do alot of dehydrating. I spent the extra money and bought an Excalibur and it is amazing how more efficient it is compared to the Nesco square dehydrator. While I liked having the fan element on the top away from any drips it is not as efficient as the Excalibur's fan that blows the air across the trays instead of vertically through all the trays and the wet food. The Excalibur is noisier than the Nesco.
Bottom line: If noise is a bigger issue than efficiency for you then get the Nesco. If efficiency is more important than noise and you will be dehydrating a lot then splurge for the Excalibur with the horizontal blowing air.

I have put this dehydrator 'through the paces', making jerky and drying fruit. It's done a great job with both. I've had the more common round type of dehydrator in the past, so I was interested in this square-shaped one. Much better! Food fits on the square sheets much better. The drying is very uniform, without need for moving the trays during the drying process. Great price too, with several accessories available.

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this dehydrator
pros:
- It's as quiet as a box fan set to 'low'
- It dries evenly, so the whole tray is done at the same time
- The thermostat is accurate (I tested it at 95 degrees and 135 degrees)
- It does indeed hold a good bit more than a round dehydrator
cons:
- There is no on/off switch, so you have to unplug it when not in use.

I have 3 daughters ages 9, 10, and 12. They have tried making bracelets before and got bored very fast. Not the case with this item. They have had it for over a month now and are still creating bracelets. I have had to purchase more string for them but the foam discs have held up very well. They have also learned different patterns and made their own. This is a great rainy day activity even though my girls have sat on the porch on nice days and weaved away. Easy to learn, hard to put down.

We bought this for our 7 year old daughter for her birthday hoping to interest her in a new hobby that would encourage her creativity (and keep her hands busy). The manufacturer suggests this product for 8-12 year olds and I would generally agree (based on dexterity and attention span). However, some younger children, especially those that have the attention span and can repeat a pattern with their hands fairly reliably, will be able to master this activity. Our 5 1/2 year old daughter has given it a try but needs help every once in a while when she gets off the pattern.
We've noticed that the girls don't have as much problem with the circular looms. However, they've had difficulty getting the bracelets from the square looms to come out uniformly. It seems to be a matter of learning how to keep uniform tension on the floss and weave consistently. Not difficult; it just takes a little attention and practice.

Let me just first say that I bought this to make bracelets with my 3 year old daughter. She has been into the simple stringing of beads to make bracelets and I thought this might be fun for her. Not only is it fun for her, its fun for me too. She needed my help for the first bracelet, but now she can make them on her own and they come out perfect every single time. We got this less than a week ago and she has already made over 10 bracelets on her own. I love that it comes with 4 different designs.

Nancy Zieman is a Baby Lock dealer, so this book is heavily slanted in that direction. If you have a Baby Lock, it might be very useful. It is full of very pretty pictures, but not all that much useful information. We beginners need a book that is not an advertisement for a certain kind of machine. What is really needed is a "Machine Embroidery for Dummies" type book since the introduction of the Singer Futura and Quantum Futura machines which run off your computer have made it possible for so many more of us to afford embroidery machines. It's a whole new ballgame, and there are going to be a whole lot more players than ever before! Save your money and keep looking for a book with more substance.

I bought this when I got my Singer embroidery machine. It is okay as far as some of the fundamentals but I think it could give more info for the price. It's too slanted toward BabyLock machines in my opinion. The book has lots of very pretty pictures but I would have liked more information to go with them. I really neither recommend or not recommend it because it depends on what you are looking for.

I nearly didn't purchase this cover because of the review that said that it was just a piece of cloth that lays over the board. When I received mine, I initially thought that Richard was right. But upon a quick examination I found two draw strings that enable you to tighten this cover to any size, and snug it up nicely. I'm very happy with the purchase. As a sewer, I appreciate the grid markings on it, and the fact that it is not the typical silver reflective ironing surface that is the worst thing for tailoring and garment shaping. The duck cloth will absorb the extra steam, rather than send it back up into the garment, keeping it wet. Overall, I'm happy with the product.

The was perfect, I have an old house with a built in ironing board, this cover was long enough. I had a hard time finding one.

Without the size of the ironing board this cover fits, I cannot buy this. The description needs to be much better.
